In the ongoing online auction, an unknown group has employed a method to collectively bid on all items simultaneously. From the perspective of the auction’s statistician, it appears that a game-theoretical strategy provided the group with a decisive advantage, enabling them to secure all objects in record time.
As a result, the auction has now been prematurely closed. The estate offered in the online auction consisted of 24 objects valued at a total of $23.867, all of which were acquired by an anonymous group called TZ.

Isolani Allele: Also, but I was already fascinated by the vastness of space as a child; it started with a gift from my father, the book “The Andromeda Nebula”.
Ursula K. Le Guin: I also dabbled with my first SF-story as an eleven-year-old child, but it was rejected by “Amazing Stories”; after that I had enough of time-travel-stories for the time being.
Isolani Allele: I’m sorry about that. My passion was further kindled by a drawing of the Andromeda Nebula.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Andromeda, a very sad female character; a patriarchal fantasy about female passivity.

Isolani Allele: I’d still like to at least fantasize about the Andromeda Galaxy with you—I really enjoyed reading your short story April in Paris in Fantastic Stories—I’m particularly interested in the time travel aspect.
Ursula K. Le Guin: As I mentioned, this is not my core theme; in my work I mainly emphasize the sociological and psychological implications of new technologies.
Isolani Allele: And yet I assume that you have also thoroughly researched the physical side?
Ursula K. Le Guin: That might be expecting a bit too much…
Isolani Allele: Let me be more specific: I am interested in your thoughts on the following – and let’s stay with the Andromeda Galaxy for our thought experiment: How can you detect the Earth, contact it, in short, imagine a transceiver?
Ursula K. Le Guin: We are talking about an immense distance here.
Isolani Allele: Around two million light years.
Ursula K. Le Guin: And you probably don’t want to wait two million years for an answer?
Isolani Allele: That should be the basis of our speculation…
Ursula K. Le Guin: …a form of “instantaneous communication.” That’s what I called it in my reflections. The basic idea is simple. We have two places to connect – in our case the Earth and the Andromeda Galaxy. Let’s imagine these places as two rocks in a pond. If one rock moves, it disturbs the water, and the ripples are transmitted to the other rock.
Isolani Allele: That means we would need an intergalactic fluid.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Exactly. Unfortunately, speculation about the ether is obsolete nowadays, and I don’t know whether the vacuum of space could serve as a transmission medium—a fluidum. It certainly doesn’t work with sound.
Isolani Allele: What do you think of cosmic background radiation?
Ursula K. Le Guin: You mean the cosmic microwave background radiation, which has now also become popular as an echo of the Big Bang?
Isolani Allele: Exactly, and recent investigations into an interference noise should provide proof—3-kelvin radiation, isotropic throughout the universe.
Ursula K. Le Guin: And in our thought experiment, we want to use the Cosmic Microwave Background—the CMB—as a fluid that “washes around” both Earth and the Andromeda Galaxy…
Isolani Allele: …and Earth—or, let’s assume, its atmosphere or molecular composition—interferes with the CMB, creating an interference pattern that could be “read out” in the Andromeda Galaxy…
Ursula K. Le Guin: A fascinating SF premise! But I can’t verify whether it holds up to physical scrutiny. The problem of transmission remains: reading out the so-called interference data shouldn’t take two million years. We would need instantaneous data transmission.
Isolani Allele: I’d also like to mention quantum physics—or more precisely, quantum entanglement—though I admit my knowledge is limited. Are you familiar with this field?
Ursula K. Le Guin: Of course, I’ve also descended into this “wonderland”. But to quote se Feyn: “Nobody understands quantum theory”.
Isolani Allele: Let me continue fantasizing for a moment. I read that Schrödinger’s Cat described this entanglement theoretically…
Ursula K. Le Guin:…and Einstein dismissively called it “spooky action at a distance.”
Isolani Allele: I know, but only recently the Bell proved that experimental evidence is at least theoretically possible, and thus we would have a potential “instantaneous transmission of information”.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Let me summarize. We have the CMB as a fluidum in which the Milky Way, Earth, and the Andromeda Galaxy are embedded. Biophysical data from Earth interferes with the CMB, and this interference pattern can be read out via quantum entanglement. One particle of the entanglement system is in Earth’s interference zone, while the other is in Andromeda’s “readout range,” enabling instantaneous data transmission. A wild ride through physics! That’s amazing.
Isolani Allele: That’s fantastic! I would like to to push this further—how can I imagine intergalactic space travel?
Ursula K. Le Guin: That’s an easy one, though I found surprisingly little when I researched it. Given the short lifespan of humans, I see three conceivable methods. First, time dilation via relativity—the twin paradox—but that’s of little use for intergalactic travel. Second, shortening the space component via a wormhole—a time fold. And finally, traveling outside the space-time structure, as imagined with the warp drive.
…Your thoughts seem too developed for an amateur astronomer. Tell me—what drives you?
Isolani Allele: My ideas might be a bit bizarre, perhaps more suited for Amazing Stories than a scientific journal. Have you heard of extremophiles?
Ursula K. Le Guin: …Not familiar.
Isolani Allele: They are organisms—or even complex life forms—adapted to extreme environmental conditions.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Like heat- or drought-resistant spores?
Isolani Allele: Exactly, or high-altitude lichens and mosses, or the so-called moss mice, which glide across the ice before moving on; however, my interest was sparked by the Tardigrada…
Ursula K. Le Guin: Tardi…what?!
Isolani Allele: Also called Water bears or Moss pigs—multicellular organisms visible under a magnifying glass, found across the entire Earth.
Ursula K. Le Guin: And these Water bears are extremophiles?
Isolani Allele: Exactly. They’ve been discovered in the high Alps, Antarctica, even arid regions—and they can withstand ionizing radiation.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Like cockroaches.
Isolani Allele: Water bears are considerably tougher. It is believed that they are even vacuum-resistant and can survive temperatures around absolute freezing point.
Ursula K. Le Guin: The perfect astronauts!
Isolani Allele: At least much more resistant than poor Laika.
Ursula K. Le Guin: But you don’t want to write a SF story?
